Buikwe Second Outreach – 17th July 2023
On the 17th of July 2023, Sunrise Heart Outreach Organisation returned to Buikwe District for a follow-up outreach. This second visit was prompted by the overwhelming response from the community during the initial 2022 outreach and the continued needs of children, elderly residents, and people with disabilities. The return visit was strategically planned to address gaps left during the previous outreach, provide additional educational materials, and extend social support to other vulnerable groups.
Activities Carried Out
The outreach began with a community sensitization and guidance meeting, where the organisation’s team explained the purpose of the visit, the planned activities, and reassured residents of continued support. Emphasis was placed on the importance of education, health, hygiene, and the psychological well-being of children and adults alike.
The organisation distributed books, exercise materials, and school supplies to children who were previously unable to benefit from the initial outreach. This included textbooks for different classes, stationery, and educational kits. Particular attention was given to children in Primary 4 to Primary 7, supporting their preparation for national examinations.
Counseling sessions were conducted for both children and adults. The sessions targeted families with children who had dropped out of school, adolescent girls dealing with puberty, and adults experiencing poverty-related stress. The guidance emphasized resilience, hope, and strategies for coping with adversity, reinforcing the community’s capacity to sustain improvements after the organisation’s visit.
In addition, the team visited people with physical disabilities in the community. Three mattresses were provided to individuals who had no proper bedding, ensuring they could rest comfortably and improving their quality of life. Clothing, soap, and basic hygiene materials were also distributed to vulnerable adults.
The outreach concluded with a shared communal meal, which strengthened social cohesion, gave families the opportunity to interact, and provided a moment of joy in a community that frequently experiences hardship.
Budget and Financial Overview
The total cost of this outreach was 2,840,000 UGX, allocated as follows:
• Educational materials (books, stationery, kits) – 1,100,000 UGX
• Mattresses for disabled individuals – 600,000 UGX
• Clothing and hygiene materials for adults – 700,000 UGX
• Communal meal – 300,000 UGX
• Transport, fuel, and vehicle maintenance – 140,000 UGX
The organisation strategically used the available funds to maximize reach and impact, ensuring that priority needs were addressed effectively.
Impact on the Community
The immediate impact was significant. Children received materials that allowed them to continue their education, adolescent girls were better equipped to manage their menstrual health, and physically disabled residents felt included and cared for. The counseling sessions helped families understand that challenges could be mitigated with community support, planning, and perseverance.
Additionally, this second outreach reinforced hope and trust within the community. Many residents expressed deep gratitude for the organisation’s return visit, highlighting that the outreach made them feel valued and remembered. The act of providing mattresses to disabled individuals also sent a strong message about inclusion and dignity for all community members.
Teachers reported an improvement in children’s school attendance and engagement, particularly among those who had struggled in the previous year due to lack of educational materials. The outreach also created ripple effects: families were inspired to take small initiatives at home, such as improved hygiene practices and minor home-based businesses, which slightly alleviated financial strain.
Impact on the Organisation
Returning to Buikwe strengthened the organisation’s credibility and visibility in the district. Community leaders, school officials, and beneficiaries recognized Sunrise Heart Outreach Organisation as a consistent and dependable partner, which laid the groundwork for sustained collaboration in future years.
The outreach also improved internal organisational capacity, as the team gained further experience in logistics planning, community engagement, and distribution of resources under budget constraints. Lessons learned here informed strategies for subsequent 2024 outreaches.
Challenges Faced
Several challenges were noted:
• The number of beneficiaries far exceeded initial estimates, requiring careful prioritization.
• Limited funding meant that some children and adults in need could not be reached.
• Transport costs and logistics planning were more complex due to the larger scope of beneficiaries.
• Some community members expected continuous material support, creating high demand beyond the organisation’s capacity.
Long-Term Outcomes
The Buikwe second outreach reinforced education, hygiene, and community cohesion. Beneficiaries expressed increased motivation to continue schooling, while adults reported greater optimism about their ability to provide for their families. The organisation also strengthened its network of local contacts, which is essential for identifying future areas of need and sustaining community engagement.
The visit demonstrated that consistent follow-ups are essential for building trust, promoting empowerment, and ensuring that interventions have a lasting effect rather than being one-off events.
